JFF boss Ricketts aims for sustainable programme to secure Jamaica’s World Cup presence

Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) President Michael Ricketts has outlined ambitious plans for the nation’s football future, aiming not only for automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup but also for sustained competitiveness in subsequent World Cup cycles.

During a press conference held at the JFF headquarters on Thursday, Ricketts emphasized the goal of creating a sustainable programme that would enable Jamaica to challenge for World Cup qualification for years to come. He highlighted the broader impact on the social well-being of young players and the community as a key objective.

The recently-returned JFF boss stressed the importance of leaving a lasting legacy and positively impacting the lives of aspiring athletes, aiming to inspire and empower young boys and girls through football.

Jamaica will compete in Group E of the second round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, against Guatemala, Dominica, Dominican Republic, and the British Virgin Islands. The top two teams from the group will advance to the third round of qualification.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to feature an expanded 48-team tournament, including six automatic qualifying spots allocated to CONCACAF, Jamaica sees an opportunity to secure a place in the prestigious tournament. However, Ricketts emphasized the need for continued diligence and hard work, despite favorable circumstances.

While acknowledging Jamaica’s potential as one of the top contenders for remaining qualifying spots, Ricketts underlined the importance of rigorous preparation and long-term development strategies. He highlighted the engagement of coach Heimir Hallgrímsson as a crucial step towards building a robust development programme for the future.

Jamaica’s historic appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 1998 serves as a foundation for the nation’s football aspirations, with Ricketts aiming to build upon that legacy and secure a sustained presence on the global stage.
