Peru: Gov't expresses deep sorrow over passing of former Uruguayan President Mujica

The Government and people of Peru on Tuesday conveyed their deepest condolences to the people of Uruguay on the passing of former President Jose Mujica, a public servant of unwavering integrity and steadfast commitment to his principles.

"His humility, closeness to the people, and commitment to the common good will remain as a legacy for future generations," reads the message from the Executive Branch, shared on the Presidential Office's social media accounts.

The Government also expressed its condolences "to his family, friends, and all those who shared with him the dream of a fairer and more compassionate world," the post reads.

Former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica died Tuesday at the age of 89, after battling esophageal cancer diagnosed a year ago.

"With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our dear colleague Pepe Mujica —president, activist, leader, and guide. We will miss you dearly, beloved old friend. Thank you for everything you gave us and for your deep love for your people," Uruguay's current Head of State, Yamandu Orsi, expressed via X on the occasion.

His passing has shocked the world, as Mujica was known for his simplicity in both his public and private life.
