Delco  awarded $500,000 EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant to spur redevelopment

The Redevelopment Authority of the County of Delaware recently announced reception of $500,000 in funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2025 Brownfields Community-wide Assessment Grant program. This amount represents the highest level of funding available through the program.

The money will support the county’s ongoing mission to identify and assess brownfield properties, which are sites that may be contaminated or underutilized, in preparation for cleanup and redevelopment. The funding enables Delaware County to conduct critical Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments to determine the environmental conditions of targeted properties, thereby removing barriers to investment and revitalization.

“This funding is a significant win for Delaware County,” said Delaware County Council Chair Dr. Monica Taylor. “We are thrilled to learn that our redevelopment authority has received $500,000 from the EPA, the maximum award for brownfield assessment; and we are especially proud of the outstanding leadership of Laura Goodrich Cairns and the Economic Development Corporation for securing these critical resources. This grant will help us lay the groundwork for a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous future for our communities.”

Matthew Sullivan, chair of the redevelopment authority, said, “The award will allow the RDA to continue its important work on revitalizing communities in our county. Being able to provide funding for Phase I and Phase II ESAs, coupled with the revolving loan funds that we received from EPA in 2023, allow us to provide significant financial incentives for these revitalization efforts.”

The next step is identifying priority sites across the county and working with local stakeholders to support brownfield redevelopment opportunities that align with community needs.

Additional details on specific sites will be announced in the coming months. For more information, contact the Delaware County Redevelopment Authority at 610-556-2225 or visit www.delcopa.org.

Hedgerow to hold afternoon of music and community

Hedgerow Theatre Company, 64 Rose Valley Road, Rose Valley, and local folk music duo Last Chance will welcome longtime WXPN DJ Chuck Elliott for a special, one-day-only concert.

It’ll be Sunday, June 22 at 2 p.m. in Hedgerow’s 100-seat theater, housed in an atmospheric 19th-century grist mill. Elliott will serve as the master of ceremonies with musical performances by Last Chance and special guests Bethlehem and Sad Patrick.

Tickets are $25 and available for purchase online. The concert continues Hedgerow’s history of presenting musical acts and concerts between its theater productions.

Elliott, a native of Brooklyn, came to Philadelphia in 1967 to attend the University of Pennsylvania and has been in radio for over 50 years, mostly at WXPN/88.5. He is mostly known as the host of WXPN’s popular Saturday morning program “Sleepy Hollow.” He’s also worked in computer operations and as a registered nurse.

Elliott has participated in local community theater, including roles in “JB,” “The Man Who Came to Dinner,” “Rehearsal for Murder,” and the female version of “The Odd Couple.”

For the June 22 concert, audiences will be treated to live performances by Last Chance, a musical duo comprised of Jack Scott and Ingrid Rosenback. Since the duo formed in 2012, they’ve released six studio albums featuring intelligent, handcrafted original songs, appealing to audiences of diverse ages and musical tastes.

Last Chance has performed their lively music throughout Greater Philadelphia at festivals, coffee houses, clubs and theaters, including the Suzanne Roberts Theatre and Hedgerow.

All their music is original, and all their shows are fun. They are five-time veterans of the Philadelphia Folk Festival and winners of the 2018 Delmarva Folk Hero Contest.
